Why Compass Direction Matters
Two rooms with the same furniture can read completely differently — because the bagua rotates with true north. The bearing is everything.
1. The two schools
Black Hat school aligns the bagua to the room's door — quick, but it ignores the building's real orientation. Compass (Classical) school aligns to true north, so the map reflects the actual energy of the land and sky. Petra uses the Compass school, which is why she asks for your bearing.
2. How to find true north
Your phone's compass points to magnetic north. True north differs by your local magnetic declination — a few degrees east or west depending on where you live. For a room reading the difference is small, but Petra accounts for it automatically from your location so the bagua sits true.
3. How the bearing rotates the bagua
Watch the animation: the room's walls are fixed, but the colored bagua ring spins as the bearing changes. A sofa in the same physical corner can be in your Wealth zone at one bearing and your Career zone at another. Get the bearing wrong and every recommendation shifts to the wrong corner.
4. Common mistakes
• Using magnetic north and forgetting declination. • Taking the bearing from outside the room instead of standing inside it. • Holding the phone near metal or electronics, which throws the compass off. • Reading the door wall as “north” out of habit (that's the Black Hat method, not Compass).
How Petra captures your bearing
Tap the 🧭 pill at the top of the chat to enable your compass. Petra records the exact direction your camera faces at the moment of the scan and bakes it into the reading — so the bagua is oriented to your real space, not a guess.
