The Five Elements — Wu Xing

1. The five elements

Wood is growth and vitality (plants, tall shapes, greens). Fire is passion and recognition (candles, reds, triangles). Earth is stability and nourishment (ceramics, squares, earthy tones). Metal is clarity and precision (white, round metal objects). Water is flow and wisdom (mirrors, blues, wavy forms).

2. The Generating Cycle

The green arrows show how each element nourishes the next: Wood feeds Fire → Fire makes Earth (ash) → Earth bears Metal → Metal carries Water → Water grows Wood. Place elements in this order and energy flows smoothly, each one feeding its neighbor.

3. The Controlling Cycle

The red dashed arrows show how elements restrain each other: Wood parts Earth → Earth dams Water → Water quenches Fire → Fire melts Metal → Metal cuts Wood. A controlling pairing isn't “bad” — it's how you calm an element that's too strong (add Water to cool an over-Fiery room).

4. How to balance elements in a room

First notice what dominates — a room full of electronics and red is Fire-heavy; a concrete basement is Earth-heavy. Then add the element that gently controls the excess, or the one the cycle says it generates, to keep flow. A single crystal in the right color and element is often enough to nudge the balance.
